In this article I personally talk about Bournout .
I am Lorenzo Bergamini , CEO of BLIVALE , and I believe I was hit by Bournout at the end of June 2023, during an extremely hot day, while visiting a client in Treviso (Italy).
It was around lunchtime, and all of a sudden I felt very tired. I stopped at a truck stop, parked the car near a plant for shade. I rolled down the windows and stayed there for about 2 hours, maybe I even fell asleep.
I visited the last customer, and returned home, luckily just a few kilometers away.
From that moment I was about 1 month not too well. I felt too hot, I was always tired. I didn't feel like doing anything.
The peculiarity is that I also had intestinal problems: I hadn't gone to the bathroom for about 1 week, for a person who goes there every day, it was truly unusual. It happened to me 2 times in 15 days.
I called the emergency room about this, but they told me that neither the hospital nor the GP could do anything. I had to help myself to "evacuate". So I did.
Then one morning I woke up and realized that I had to change something in my life. So at the end of July 2023 after about 1 month of suffering, tiredness, malaise, bad mood, etc., I decided to change my home.
Returning to Tenerife (Spain) or Valencia (Spain) was not yet planned, I had to wait a few more months, I understood that I had to look for a place to live by the sea.
I started looking, only the first date was enough, and since the end of September 2023 I now live in the province of Venice, by the sea, and my life has changed for the better.
Certainly I have kept this crisis inside me for a long time, also caused by this Covid-19 which blocked us for many months, and every now and then continues to make itself felt. No, I was not affected by Covid-19, I also took the 3 doses required in Italy. Certainly for a person who is used to travelling, not feeling stuck, and much more, 1 year as intense as 2020, and subsequently another 2/3 years contributed to making me feel unwell.
I'm talking about it because I believe I was hit by Bournout, and only an intense malaise and an immediate intervention on myself certainly allowed me to get out of it.
I changed the city, I went to live and I will remain there for a few more months in the seaside area, waiting to return to Tenerife and Valencia.
So I did some research in recent months and I report the results below.
Introduction to burnout
Burnout is an increasingly widespread phenomenon in modern society. In this article, we'll explore what burnout is, why it's talked about so much, who gets affected, and the associated symptoms. Additionally, we will provide some tips on how to resolve burnout and promote mental and physical well-being.
Burnout is a term coined in the 1970s by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger, who described it as a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by chronic work-related stress. Burnout is not just a simple feeling of tiredness, but it is a disorder that can have serious health consequences.
Why is there so much talk about it?
In recent years, burnout has become a topic of great interest in modern society. This is due to the fact that more and more people are faced with chronic stress and intense work pressure.
Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased stress levels in the general population, leading many people to be more vulnerable to burnout.
Who is affected by burnout?
Burnout can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or work sector.
However, some categories of people may be more susceptible to burnout.
For example, those who work in high-stress professions such as doctors, nurses, teachers and journalists are most at risk.
Additionally, people who have a perfectionist personality and place too many expectations on themselves are more prone to developing burnout.
Symptoms of burnout
Burnout can manifest itself through a variety of physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Chronic tiredness and lack of energy
- Difficulty concentrating and memory problems
- Changes in appetite and sleep
- Irritability and constant anxiety
- Loss of interest in usually enjoyable activities
- Feeling of helplessness and disillusionment
- Physical health problems such as headaches, stomach pain and muscle pain
How to solve burnout
The good news is that burnout can be overcome with the help of some effective strategies. Here are some tips for solving burnout:
- Identify the causes of your stress. It is important to identify the causes of your stress so you can deal with them effectively. Make a list of the situations or tasks that cause you the most stress and try to identify any recurring patterns.
- Set clear boundaries. Set clear boundaries in your work and personal life. Learn to say "no" when necessary and balance your work responsibilities with your free time.
- Take care of your body. Physical well-being is key to addressing burnout. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat a healthy and balanced diet and do regular physical activity. Movement can help you reduce stress and improve your mood.
- Seek social support. Sharing your feelings with people you care about can be extremely therapeutic. Seek support from friends, family, or a qualified professional such as a psychologist or psychotherapist.
- Spend time relaxing. Find activities that help you relax and unwind. This could include practices like yoga, meditation, or simply spending time on a hobby you enjoy.
- Create a work-life balance. Try to establish a healthy work-life balance. Set clear boundaries between the two worlds and make time for activities that give you pleasure outside of work.
- Take a break. Take regular breaks during the workday to recharge your batteries. Even a short walk outdoors can help you regenerate and reduce stress.
- Seek help from a professional. If your burnout persists despite your efforts to overcome it, don't hesitate to seek help from a psychologist or mental health specialist. A qualified professional can provide you with the tools you need to deal with burnout effectively.
Prevention of burnout
In addition to resolving burnout once it has arisen, it is also important to prevent it. Here are some tips to prevent burnout:
- Set clear boundaries early on in your work and personal life.
- Exercise regularly to reduce stress.
- Find a healthy work-life balance.
- Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.
